Here in Rathmullan

Donegal not only boasts some of the most breath-taking natural scenery in the world, those culturally curious visitors will also have plenty to keep them busy. From the 16th century Abbey in Rathmullan to the 19th century Glebe Gallery in Churchill, there is no shortage of places of historical interest within reach of Rathmullan House.

‘The flight of the Earls’ which took place in 1607 is often described as the beginning of modern Irish history. It was the pier in Rathmullan from which the last of the Irish clan leaders left the country for good and the event is now commemorated by a statue on Rathmullan beach.

Local historian Deirdre Friel works closely with Rathmullan House and during summer months conducts historical tours of both Rathmullan and Ramelton. These tours paint a vivid image of how our little village has played its part in Irish history and the many characters that have been involved throughout the centuries. For more information on Donegal Heritage Trails, have a look at Deirdre's website.

For the lively end of the evening, the Beachcomber Bar is a must. With a stunning setting overlooking the Swilly, you can watch the sun set before dancing the night away to traditional Irish music or more modern tunes depending on the night of the week. The White Hart offers a family run pub feel and Mary McAteer is often on first name terms with our guests

Just a short drive along the Swilly and you will find the historic town of Ramelton where you can opt for the thatched roof and open fires of Conways Bar, or the fantastic food and live music at the Bridge Bar.

Our setting here in Donegal is spectacular but what makes a trip to our little region different, is the welcome you receive and the memories that are made. We keep it simple and stick to what works, a smiling face, good food and plenty of Kinnegar Beer seems to be a successful formula!
